It does sound like a contradiction in terms, but in fact it makes perfect sense. We've spoken about the issue of trust on the internet, but it's worth repeating that you need to break down as many barriers as possible to ensure that your customers order from you - hopefully on a regular basis.
The easiest way to do this is to provide something for free. The customer has nothing to lose by signing up for a free newsletter; if they don't like it all they need to do is unsubscribe. You are required to put a link in each email, giving the person the option to unsubscribe each time.
By reading your newsletter each time and learning from the information you provide, your subscribers will start to build a relationship with you. If you then recommend a product that would be relevant to your niche audience, they will be far more likely to buy it from you than from a totally unknown seller.
In essence then, an email newsletter is your way of proving yourself in the long term.
We know there are plenty of ways to make sure eBay traffic flows from the auction site onto your website, and gets directed to your About Me page, where you can mention the existence of your newsletter.
But just in case all those methods pass by the buyer, you can also attract their attention to it when you mail out an order, by including a printed copy of the latest newsletter in with their item(s). All you need to do is encourage them to do one of the following:
o Ask them to email you a request to join your newsletter mailing list (they would then need to respond to your confirmation email to start receiving the newsletter)
o Ask them to visit your website and join your emailing list from there. Some people set up a dedicated page which describes the purpose of having the newsletter and detailing the benefits of receiving it.

If you are selling e-books and there is no physical need to mail out an actual product, all that's needed is an invitation to join your newsletter - included either in the body of the winning buyer email, or in the signature section at the end.
